In this role, Mr. Washington focuses on gathering and analyzing student performance data while developing schools' ability to use data to improve their progress monitoring. He supports teachers in increasing their ability to assess student learning through formative and performance-based assessments. He also supports the division's Professional Learning Community (PLC) initiative by participating on several school's Transitional Leadership Team. In related service, Anthony is also a Board Member of the Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (VASCD).

While serving in an interim capacity, Mr. Washington lead a division-level team of content area specialists in supporting teaching and learning across 44 schools. He helped to organize multiple professional development workshops for the division's over 2,000 teachers to equip them with instructional strategies geared toward increasing student engagement and technology integration. Mr. Washington created and implemented online registration, call for proposals, scheduling, and evaluation systems for division-wide professional development. He also served as a member of the executive

Mr. Washington supported and provided instructional leadership to several programs geared toward maximizing the potential of students who demonstrate advanced academic ability in one or more areas. Mr. Washington helped to create a common application process for the Richmond City's specialty high schools, increased the quantity of service provided to gifted students through a service model that allowed every elementary and middle school received gifted services, and made provisions so that the top 10% of students in every school are receiving gifted services. He also worked to increase the instructional strategies used within gifted and comprehensive classes through narrowly tailored, systematic professional development for faculty on identifying and working with ethnic, cultural, and language minorities in line with the vision and mission of the division. 

 

 

Teacher, Saturday Enrichment Program for the Gifted

Mr. Washington taught WeDo I: Lego Robotics course to students in Kindergarten – 3rd grade during the Summer and Saturday Enrichment classes for three consecutive iterations of the program. As a result of his interaction with the students, it became evident that another course in Robotics with a slightly different focus was necessary. Mr. Washington then created and wrote lessons for a problem-based learning course, WeDesign, to instruct students in planning and analyzing the financial, creative, and marketing aspects of robot design. Mr. Washington currently teaches this course seasonally during the Saturday Enrichment Program.

 

Assistant Director, Camp Launch 

Center for Gifted Education, College of William & Mary

Camp Launch is a summer residential program at The College of William & Mary for high-ability students from low-income environments funded through a grant from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Mr. Washington's responsibilities included ongoing coordination and correspondence with participating school districts for the safe and orderly arrival of 55 seventh grade students, ensuring all aspects of the camp were in compliance with the grant, hiring counselors and staff, scheduling camp activities, and creating marketing collateral.

 

Editor, The Bridge: Connecting Research to Practice

Center for Gifted Education, College of William & Mary

As a graduate student, Mr. Washington was selected to design and edit a comprehensive publication that was distributed biannually by the Center for Gifted Education. In this role, he reviewed articles from Center directors, affiliates, and students for inclusion in the digital publication and was responsible for managing distribution to a database of over 10,000 researchers, teachers, and parents. Mr. Washington also created a website to host the blog and used digital marketing software to distribute the newsletter.  

 

Director of Bands and Orchestra, I.C. Norcom High School

Portsmouth, Virginia | 2008-2010

 

Mr. Washington was able to re-initiate the string orchestra and jazz ensembles at Norcom. In addition, he conducted the symphonic and marching bands who competed both locally and nationally earning various accolades and awards. Mr. Washington wrote and delivered a curriculum that allowed students to learn and understand advanced musical concepts through compositions and using musicians with whom they were familiar.

Mr. Washington taught instrumental music and music appreciation to 9th – 12th grade students while also conducting the school's concert, jazz, and marching bands. While at this position, he was hand-picked and trained to teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years and Diploma Programmes music curriculum. Mr. Washington taught IB using college level theory and composition through the lens of several different cultures. Students were engaged in a variety of learning experiences designed to broaden their international understanding while gaining musical knowledge. 

 

Orchestra Teacher, Albert Hill & Henderson Middle School

Mr. Washington worked as an itinerant music instructor for two middle school orchestra programs during. He utilized the small class sizes to allow flexibility to specifically tailor instruction to individual students needs and provide a great deal of individual support. This experience provided a foundation in understanding how to design instruction to improve student achievement that has been honed and expounded upon throughout his career. 

 

 

Band Director, Taft Middle School

Detroit Public Schools 

Detroit, Michigan | 2004-2005

 

During his first teaching experience, Mr. Washington was able to revitalize a music program that had declined to fewer than 20 students per grade level. Within his first year, the school saw a 300% increase in the number of students who chose music as their elective in addition to the creation of the schools' first marching band and New Orleans-style jazz band. Many of the students who found their musical beginnings in these classes continued to play in school ensembles throughout high school and earned college scholarships.
